Description
Since the emergence of the video medium, different recording, playback and display systems have been developed that later became obsolete due to technological evolution. This equipment (video recorders, monitors, projectors, …) often becomes rare. But at the same time, access to it is crucial to exhibit old video works and safeguard them for the future. This is not only the case for video based artworks but also for computer based artworks. The workshop will address current research and case studies dealing with obsolete equipment.
The Obsolete Equipment project research team, from PACKED vzw and the Netherlands Media Art Institute (NIMk) in collaboration with S.M.A.K.( Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent) MuHKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp), Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage / ICN, Kröller Müller Museum and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, will present museal practice and research in acquisition, storage, preservation and future use of equipment in five short lectures.
Johannes Gfeller will give a general introduction to the topic of obsolete equipment and will point out the use of a collection of equipment for its referential character. Gaby Wijers will present the 'practical' results of the research project Obsolete Equipment collecting best practices, guidelines and inventories of knowledge centers and (old) equipment repositories. Dieter Vermeulen will speak about equipment replacement in the video based case study 'Das ende des jahrhunderts' (Klaus vom Bruch, 1985), furthermore computer based case studies will be presented by Cécile Dazord and Paul Klomp. This last lecture will focus on new emulation insights that stem from the case study for 'Revolution' (Jeffrey Shaw, 1990) within the scope of the EU project Inside Installations.
Biography
Gaby Wijers is Coordinator of collection, preservation and related research at the Netherlands Media Art Institute (NIMk), Amsterdam (NL). She coordinated the project Preservation of Video Art in the Netherlands 2001-2003, participated in research projects as 404 Object not found, OASIS archive, Inside Installations, GAMA and currently in Inside Movement Knowledge and Obsolete Equipment. Gaby is since 2008 head of the Steering Committee of the SBMK.
Biography
Johannes Gfeller has been involved in video production since 1978. He studied art history, philosophy and linguistics at the University of Bern. From 1983 to 2001, he worked independently in the fields of specialialist photography, video and exhibition technology. From 1988 to 2002 he was a lecturer in video art at the Schule für Gestaltung Bern and Biel/Bienne (SfGB-B). Since 2001 he has been professor at the Bern University of the Arts, in the Department of Conservation and Restoration. Gfeller has also been in charge of the research project AktiveArchive since 2002.

Paul (Jansen) Klomp, Almelo, 1956, Lives in Hengelo, NL . Studied monumental design / painting at AKI academy, Enschede and Initially working as an autonomous artist gradually specialized in developing and creating hard- and software solutions for media and interactive works. In 1995 he founded 'klomp kunst & electro'. Since 2000 he teaches Media Art at Artez academy Enschede, Physical Computing at KMT Interaction Design Utrecht and Hardware at Liacs Mediatechnology MA, Leiden University.
Biography
Dieter Vermeulen , 1978. Studied Master in fine arts (3 dimensional design) at the Royal Academy for Fince Arts / KASK, Ghent and Cultural Management at UAMS at the University of Antwerp. He worked as production assistent and manager for Elektrischer Schnellseher, Zapomatik (Johan Grimonprez) and TasteThis. Currently Dieter is a freelance video conservator, researcher for S.M.A.K. and lecturer in the conservation of electronic media at TeBeAc, a post-graduate course at the Hogeschool Gent.

Rony Vissers coordinates since January 2009 PACKED vzw. PACKED stands for Platform for the Archiving and Preservation of Audiovisual Arts. It is a collaboration between argos - centre for arts and media (Brussels), eDAVID (expertise centre for digital archiving in Flemish institutions and administrations), MDD (Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle), MuHKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) and S.M.A.K. (Municiple Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent). Between 2006 and 2008 he worked as collection manager at argos - centre for arts and media (Brussels). Together with Herman Asselberghs and Els Opsomer he created the installation
/Mondophrenetic/^/TM/ (2000). He also produced the video dial /H-I-S-TO-R-Y /(Johan Grimonprez, 1997) and the film installation /Dialogues/ (Franciska Lambrechts, 1996).
