Seminar Redefining the Museum for Contemporary Art

Posted on Thu, 09/25/2008 - 11:44
Essential to contemporary art is the shift towards the concept away from the material object, as much as the use of non traditional and degradable materials or the use of technology as an essential part of the work. Other relevant aspects are the often unorthodox process, individual artistic intent, involvement of the spectator, relation to the site, or the ephemeral nature of the works. Contemporary disparate forms of art
production challenges interpretation as well as museum traditions of collecting, preserving and presenting art works, creating tensions that sometimes require unconventional decisions.

This one day seminar will be comprised of two sessions, a morning session to present and discuss the larger issues regarding the challenges presented to the museum by the specific nature of contemporary art and an afternoon session that will allow for more focused consideration of the issues using case studies.
