Site-related aspects are challenging the conservation and presentation of 'site-specific' works of contemporary art. Main questions are: Which characteristics are relevant for site-specific works? What does it mean to conserve and present site-specific works in different contexts? Aiming at a theoretical and practical framework for conservation in which the various aspects of 'site', 'migration' and 're-contextualization' are implied, this study examines three strategies: 're-installation', 'remaking' and 'transformation'. For each strategy comparative case studies will be carried out including theoretical and biographical research (art historical, archival and literature search, interviews, etc.). Those 'thickly defined' case studies will provide insight into the notion of 'site-specificity' for conservation and contribute to decision-making processes in museum practice.
