Programme and institute
Photographic Preservation & Collections Management, Ryerson University.
Curriculum
The joint graduate program provides an integrated program of academic study and professional education that will equip
students to meet current responsibilities and future demands in photographic preservation and in managing and preserving
photographic collections. Its faculty includes photographic historians, scientists, practitioners, curators and other museum
professionals.
The program is the only one of its kind in the world. Its curriculum is specifically designed to deepen students' understanding
of the history of the photographic medium, particularly its social, cultural, and instrumental uses, and the purposes
and functions of photographs and photographic collections.
The intensive, two-year graduate program assumes that a photographic preservation specialistor collections manager must
be acquainted with the materials of photography, with its history, the social and cultural conditions of its production, and the
critical and theoretical conceptions that inform its reception.
Proffesional outreach
The PPCM program has expanded its partnerships so that students will spend the second year of their studies at one one of the
following institutions: George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, Rochester, and in Toronto, The Art Gallery
of Ontario, The Archive of Modern Conflict, or Ryerson's very own Ryerson Image Centre. Institutional placement in the second
year will reflect student preference. Situated in the heart of Toronto, Canada's most exciting city, Ryerson is a degree-granting
institution with both undergraduate and graduate programs that foster close links with professional bodies. It offers a
concentration of imaging-related programs and facilities, while George Eastman House combines one of the most encyclopedic
and important collections of photography in the world with an advanced research library and a sophisticated program of exhibitions.
Faculty of both Ryerson and GEH are internationally regarded for their work in photographic history, curatorial practice, preservation
and conservation.
Entry requirements Applicants must have graduated from a four year approved undergraduate University Program or equivalent with a minimum B
standing or equivalent over all courses in the final half of the program. Post-secondary education in the areas of art history
and photography are preferred but not essential. Work related experience in museum and archive collections is considered
an asset. Applications for admission are reviewed by a graduate committee made up of faculty teaching in the program.
All students in the program will be enrolled in Ryerson’s School of Graduate Studies and must apply through the school.
